10/24/2008 2:05 AM Pacific Time Hi all,
Greetings from the UK...
Hands up here I DONT have a C22 I have a Jaguar 22 (nearly same boat)
My recently aquired 22 suffered badly at the hands of Jack the
Ripper who attempted to "repair" the swing keel housing.
I am left with a boat that does not have the bottom of the kingpost
supported and the armrest has been removed and lost.....(by jack)
Can anyone / someone do me a really big favour and look inside the
port locker next to the kingpost and tell me what is in there please?
(ok,ok other than fresh air :-) )
What I am trying to establish is what supports the kingpost and how
big is "it"
Some 22's in the UK appear to have the kingpost sitting on the armrest with nothing else....
Is there a timber support under the kingpost and if there is how
thick is it and where is it bonded to?
Is the hull reinforced around the swing keel housing? Plywood?
A photo or two would be really helpful.
This all boils down to the $1M question....what down force is there on the mast at "worst case"....and no one seems to be able to advise me so ....
I spoke at length with a really helpful guy from Catalina direct and he pointed out that there are differences between years etc
Many thanks
John
ps anyone with a 22 near Southampton in the UK please??
Could have a peek inside?
pps sailed her a couple of times and its just beautiful, the 6" ali i beam I have temp rigged up inside spoils her inside looks :-) and makes getting to the porta potty a real adventure...

Go to this site and look at the first and third pictures:
The first one shows a cutaway of the keel trunk outer layer, with a cut off 2x4 (pressure treated to guard against rot) forward of the inner keel trunk which is not cut into. The nomenclature of outer and inner might be reversed, but I am calling the inner one the exterior one that is inside the interior one that you see from inside the cabin. Confused? Look at the picture. The third picture shows a cutaway of both inner and outer layers of the keel trunk with a short ruler laid on top for scale.
Here are some other pictures of a lower compression post replacement:
Hope this helps. They are not pictures of the inside of the port locker, but you can see how the visible compression post is supported by the arm rest with an inner post.
I see you are in SouthHampton. My dad was billeted there with a family named Prince during preparations for the Normandy Invasion. Small world.
Fair Winds!

10/24/2008 7:46 AM Pacific Time The pictures at "https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/rwahlfel/www/KenPalmer06.html" are pictures of a 1975 hull (sent to Ken), which was destined for the scrap yard, so I cut it up and took pictures. If those are not sufficient, I can send you some different ones. I give credit to Bill Bell_ of Port Orange as he gave me the boat.
