11/21/2008 6:12 AM Pacific Time This fall I lost my rudder in a storm when the boat was moored. I have a 1976 - 22' Catalina - It looks as if a new kick up rudder would cost me around $700 or a 1/3 of the value of the boat. Does anyone know anybody that is selling a used Kick-up Rudder? What's your thoughts on me building a rudder - any advice? building plans? I keep search online but really can't find much information. I keep searching Ebay & craigslist....but no such luck. I'm a new sailor and would like to make sure I have a rudder by the time snow leaves upstate new york. I can be reached at [email protected] I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks

11/21/2008 10:27 AM Pacific Time You could definitely make one. If you can connect with a nearby fleet or owner, making a profile template from another rudder wouldn't be too difficult. The original rudders are fiberglass over plywood which is easily done at home. You could also keep an eye on the classifieds here and on the other lists. Also, IdaSailor makes replacement rudders and I've heard good things about them.
Check the C22 NSA site at www.catalina22.org for a list of (hopefully) local fleets.
