Anyone have any ideas of how to rig a simple hoist for a couple of flags...maybe up the backstay perhaps.....

Depends on what kind of "flag." Some fly from the backstay, some from the shroud and some from the mast head. What "flags" do you intend to fly?

When I got Chip Ahoy, someone had already solved that problem. A PO had attached a small fairlead to the outboard bottom of the starboard spreader with a tiny block attached. I replaced the rusted little block with a new (and tinier) one, then ran a double-length of 1/8" "racing braid" through it. On each end I attached a clip that holds the flag. (Believe it or not clips are actually made for the purpose; got mine at BoatUS.) I added a small cleat to the mast and now can easily raise and lower an ensign simply by clipping to onto the line and hauling it up.

You can see photos of it at:

Chip and others - Reflections is set up in a similar way - After agonising about flag etiquette for flying the club burgee (it should be flown fron the masthead) I installed the little block at the starboard spreader, but on the new style I have an extra hole at the upper shroud chainplate. I simply created a continuous loop from the chainplate up to the block and back down. No cleating required, just pull up or down on the line. The clips you refer to are called sister clips here, and I sewed two to the club burgee and knotted two onto the hoisting line to match the position of those on the hoist.

Speaking of fun flags, a friend used to fly his girlfriend's bra (I'm sure there was a statement in that).

Careful, guys. If CD gets hold of the make and size of that bra, it'll be in the next catalogue...LOL
