We have a leak from our hose that covers the keel cable. We had to use duct tape which has held for now. We know we have to replace that hose, and I'm almost 100% sure we should take it out of the water, but not everyone agrees we need to take it out. Please advise.

Hi,

I just duct taped mine as well with a water resistant duct tape. It is also working well. However, I have already purchased a new hose and will replace the old one the next time my boat is on the trailer. From everything I have read, I vote for taking the boat out. Even if you are very light and the water does not come in throught the volcano (the fiberglass section the hose connects to), you still could drop the cable and have to go under the boat to retrieve it, or drop the cable ball that the cable runs over inside the volcano. i.e., there is too much risk in trying to replace the hose while in the water. The ramp there at Sister Bay is a nice ramp and taking the boat out, replacing the hose and putting it back in the water would be a 1 hour (or less) task.

The volcano is below the water line. In order to change the hose, you have to thread the cable out of the old one and through the new one. In the time it takes to do that, your boat will sink. Take it out of the water. Use two stainless steel hose clamps to secure the new hose to the volcano, and use another one to hold a ring of pvc, cut from a pvc pipe, inside the hose to provide a friction barrier between the cable and the upper end of the hose. A "meat hook" (loose, frayed strand of wire) could grab that rubber hose and pull it off the volcano while you're cranking away, raising the keel sometime. And, the volcano is below the waterline...
