It's time to replace the tires on my trailer. Any advice on whether bias or radials are better?

I put 6 ply radial trailer tires on mine. About $70-80 each, with each tire rated to 2250 pounds @ 60PSI (if my memory serves me well). I haven't towed any distance with them, but the tire dealer said they were the best of both worlds. I think the 6 plys and high pressure eliminate the sway that can occur with regular radials. |

Michael,
Are you using 14" or 15" tires? I cannot find any 14" tires rated at 2250 lbs. |

I just looked at http://shop.easternmarine.com/acb/showprod.cfm?&DID=12&CATID=24&ObjectGroup_ID=149
and saw ST225/75-15 "D" rated tires rated for 2540 pounds each ($71.99). I think I put 235's on the trailer to replace L78-15's.
Type in "trailer tires" in Google or give your local tire dealer a call.

Thanks for the web site. I have 14" tires on my trailer. The maximum capacity I can find is 1870 lbs. Is this sufficient for long-range hauling? Is there an problem mounting a 15" wheel on the existing trailer? |

1870 capacity should be OK. That would cover a loaded trailer weight of 3740 lb., and I believe a previous thread indicated that the range of boat+trailer was 2900-3600 lb. What you don't want to do is use a "B" load range tire rated at 1420.
Don't mess with increasing tire size. You don't want to raise the trailer height (you'd need more water to launch), and I'm not sure the lug pattern would match. |
