What is the usual procedure for aligning a bulkhead mounted compass parallel with the centerline of the boat ("A"-alignment)?

Hi,
I installed one on my C27 several years ago and it worked great. I made sure the boat was level at the dock (4 foot carpenters level) and then used a smaller level to mount it level as well. It worked great! I did the same for my C22 as well.

Thanks for the reply David. I've worked out how to level the compass, the question is how to align it with the centerline of the boat?

Most people just cut a hole in the back of the cabin and screw the compass in place. I think that the bulkheads are perpendicular to the centerline of the boat. You can check this by stretching a plumb line from the mast to the center of the stern and than take a square and visually see how close it actually is. I suspect that it is very close. If you have wheel steering, you can mount a compass on the helm and use a similar method to align it. |
