I installed new keel hangers on my 79 Cat 22 and after tightening up the bolts, the keel is cocked to one side about an inch so much than when I crank up the keel it starts to rub against the sides of the channel that the keel set up into and the pin where the cable attaches to the keel rubs against the sides of the channel also. The keel is snug between the hangers with very little wobble.
Any ideas or possible fix. Can I make the bolt mounting holes larger for adjustment. Should there be more free play in the pin/hole? |

The space on both sides of the keel is equall at the pivot pin but back at the cable mounting spot cocked sideway and sits off by about 1 inch |

What did the pivot hole look like when you had the keel down? did you replace the pin too?

Thanks for responding. The hole looks good on the keel, no wear. I got a new pin also from CD. The new pin slides snugly into the hole on the keel. No play at all. |

I think your cable may have come out of the groove in the turning ball in the "Volcano" |

I checked the cable and its sitting in the groove of the turning ball ( aft side)
All parts are new from the winch down to the eyelet screwed in the keel. Cable comes straight off winch and straight down volcano and straight through ball groove.
I googled several pictures of keels on Cat 22 on trailers and a couple of pictures showed the same thing. with the keel not perfectly in line when cranked almost all the way up.
Dumb question: My boat is sitting about 3 ft above ground being supported on top of blocks in 4 spots. Could the hull just be twisted/flexed where its sitting causing the mis alignment.? Maybee will straighten out in water?
Any ideas are helpfull at this point, I've installed / uninstalled the keel/ hangers about 15 times in the past 4 days trying to see a solution. I'm getting real good at installing keels if anyone needs help in that.
I even unbolted the hangers, dropped the keel ( on a jack) about two inches, then cranked up the winch so the rear of the keel was lined up straight and almost all the way up in the groove. Then I raised the front, installed the hangers and bolts. After snugging up the bolts the rear of keel is again off center of cable hole and the cable pin is rubbing inside of groove. Help....help |

I think you may be on to something with the way the hull is supported. Get a long level and lay it across the cockpit near the transom and compare to somewhere on the foredeck. My guess is you will find some twist in the hull. |

The keel pin has to be perfectly aligned perpendicular to the keel well. Even a small shift in the angle would send the end of the keel off center. It might be possible that the pin hangers might not be perfectly symmetrical to their bolt holes. Have you tried swapping sides with them? Also, are the mounting bolts going straight in or could one be bent? |

Hello Bill,
Only a tiny amount of clearance at the pin will allow a lot of twist farther down the keel. One sixteenth at the pin can add up quickly when multiplied eighteen inchs down.
It is not uncommon for the keel to be flopped over a bit while the boat is sitting on the trailer as the boat and axle are seldom parallel when retriving. See MainBrace, March 2011. What counts is how the keel is suspended when sailing.
If you can get your boat high enough to drop the keel to the sailing position, shims epoxied to the head can allign it perfectly. Pin hole and pin issues are mitigated as the shims and keel slot will force the keel into allignment.
When on the trailer, slight misallignment don't matter much. You can screw in a rub strake where the cable is gouging the hull.
Good Luck.

Louis is correct that you need to be able to fully release the keel cable and hang the keel all the way to see where the problem is coming from. Another hint, is that unless the keel has been faired or replaced with the new style encapsulated, the keel will have one side thicker than the other which gives the appearance of things not being in alignment when looking at it. The uneven shapen from the old keels come from the mold used at the C22 factory. |

. . .wondering if the pin holes in the keels were all originally drilled perpendicular. Are your hangers parallel to each other and the keel? |
