I was never happy with 5/16 bolts holding on the keel. I replaced with 1/2" bolts that come through the hull inside.

When I got it out of the water, I found that it needed a swing keel because the donor had not maintained the bolts, two rusted away and the other two were ripped out of the bottom when the keel came off. I read one post about bolting through the bottom and think that may be the answer. The boat is too nice to send to landfill.
