Hello, I have a fixed keel C22, hull number/sail number k25. I am curious about what year the boat is, as I bought the boat with no paper work. I have searched around and have not had a lot of luck finding info on the early fixed keel numbering system. I can only assume that the boat is pre 1972 since it has no engraved numbers on the transom. Any info would be much appreciated.

Cody since you don't have the hull number the K25 could mean anything if it is just on your sail. You can get more information from Catalina Yacht about their numbering system for sail boats. After the US Coast Guard required a numbering system for tracking boats, Frank Butler issued a memo which spells out the boat identification numbering system for Catalina Yachts. I have a copy of the memo and got it from Catalina Yachts. I'm also a CA C22 owner and know to register the boat in CA a boat identification number (BIN) is required. What number do you have on your CA paperwork? Maybe you can start from there. |

While the boat has no engraved number on the rear of the transom, it does have the metal plate on the inside of the transom. The plate says: Model-C22, Serial-K25. The paper work I got with the boat is completely wrong. It has the boat listed as a 79. I got the boat from a storage yard and I am fairly certain they just pulled that number out of thin air. I found some information stating that boats built after 1972? were required to have a permanently affixed Hull Identification Number. Which leads me to believe the boat is older than 1972. I also found some info that the early fin keel boats were numbered separate from the swing keel models. Registration is not my problem, I was more just curious of the actual year of the boat. |

I think you are right about the numbering dates. If I recall the implementation was 1972 and there was a two year grace period for boat mfg. to comply. I had a 1973 swing keel and the paperwork was correct on the registration but there was no engraved number on the right aft transom. Also, the C22 NSA has a extensive history of boat models with dates and numbers on their website compiled by former Commodore Rich Fox. He may be a good source about the numbering of fixed keel boats and you should be able to get Rich's contact information from the C22 NSA. The information he collected was originally going to be a "Coffee Table" book with pictures, stories and data, but I think he ran into copyright problems, and he never published it. He did put the information on the C22 NSA site and it may be only viewable for National members. Just one of many reasons to join the C22 NSA if you own a Catalina 22. Another source of information is the engineering department at Catalina Yachts. I don't think they will tell you the original owners name, but they have records on every boat of when, where and what it had on it when it came off the production line. Good luck with your search for information. FYI if you get a letter or email from Catalina Yachts on the data for K25 you can go to CA DMV and they will change the registration papers for a $10.00 fee, which will make it easier for you if you ever have to sell the boat, as it will show it is a "classic plastic" |
