Hi, I have found some deterioration of the fiberglass around the weep holes (underneath) in the storage compartment. There seems to be a lot of dirt in the actual compartment (cockpit side), so I was thinking the weep holes must have gotten clogged at some point and water sat in there. Has anyone else dealth with this?.. Seems to be a 2-layer construction..inner and outer fiberglass thing going on.. how far should I go to fix it? dig out the mildewy parts and re-expoxy and fiberglass? making sure the water flows freely? should I make the holes a little bigger??.. what is the general thinking on reparing this??? thanks |

I just found out these are called coaming compartments. The drainage seems like a poorly thought out idea. Has anybody built coaming compartment covers? |

The normal way of covering the coaming compartments is to make a rectangular sunbrella cloth cover with a snap on each corner. Make sure the size fits outside the wood trim and install the four snaps to each corner of the fiberglass matching it to the cloth snaps. This serves two purposes. 1) it keeps the wood trim finish from weathering 2) it keeps the dirt and rain water out of the coaming box. When I'm on the boat, I leave the top two snaps in place and just undo the bottom two snaps and leave the cloth hanging. Some people remove and reinstall the cloth after using the boat. Hope this helps. |
