We are now the proud owners of a 1982 Catalina 22. Yesterday we raised the mast and started putting things in place. There's a roller furler on the jib, but we couldn't get the furler to pin on the deck plate, being short about an inch. So we fully let out the adjustable backstay, and loosened the aft shrouds as much as we dared, but we were still short by 1/2" to securing the roller furling jib. Are we doing something wrong?

The other issue is the topping lift. We can't figure out how it attaches to the boom. Any assistance would be most greatly acknowledged!

Check the upper attachment point of your forestay. There should be a rigging toggle on it between the eye and the clevis pin. If that is missing, your forestay would indeed be about an inch too short. That toggle is extremely important, as it allows the top of the forestay to function like a universal joint. Without it, the forestay wire would be bending back and forth and would eventual fail from metal fatigue.

As for the topping lift, there are many different styles of lift, and there could be several ways for it to attach, depending upon the original intent of whoever designed and/or installed it. For a sample of what one looks like, take a look at CD's website for the topping lift kit for the C-22. As an alternative, you might also consider a boomkicker. I have one on my own boat, and favor it over the topping lift due to its simplicity of use, and greater control over sail shape you get with it.
