Is this quick release system mentioned by Dale below really safe enough?
Seems like the forward stay should have a real pin and cotter key.
I use quick release pins on the forward shrouds but I wrap ss safety wire through a hole in the wide end and hold it tight up agains the shroud. This way the little pin that someone's life may depend on is the back up and not the main thing that keeps rigging in place and the mast in a vertical positon.
By the way I seem to feel more secure if I keep my stainless steel wire cutters in my pocket when I'm sailing my Catalina 22. They are handy for rigging and derigging and can cut a line or cable fairly fast if I need to for some reason.
Trailering - Quick Release Hardware
By Dale Mack
I enjoy the freedom a trailerable boat brings me, and since Harmony is on the road for some part of the sailing season each year, finding ways to minimize the time spent rigging and unrigging the boat has made trailer-sailing easier. Here are some ideas I've borrowed from others.
Ball-Lok Quick-Release Pins with Lanyards. Only three attachment points for my standing rigging need to be released for me to drop the mast (the jib stay, and the two forward-lower shrouds). Instead of playing with clevis pins and cotter pins/rings, I use Ball-Lok quick-release pins. To avoid losing the pins, each one is attached to its turnbuckle with a lanyard. The pins I use to hold my cabin table in place, also function as backups if one of the rigging pins fails.
Snap Shackles. I use snap shackles for:
the tack of the headsail
attaching the lower mainsheet block to the traveler
and attaching the lower boom vang block to the base of the mast

Scott,
check the web site for the Avibank pins, I'm pretty sure you will come away with you questions of shear strength answered.
