I have removed my swing keel and am going to sandblast it and epoxy encapsulate it. But what exactly does it mean to "fair" it? |

You want to achieve a nice foil shape like the wing of an airplane while also ensuring that both sides are identical in shape. I believe I have a paper template that you can use to make a solid guide out of wood or cardboard. |

I have found that Catalina has used 15.75 & 16.5-inch thick keels. My keel is the larger 16.5 on my early 1985 version, before the dinette change.
http://www.onemetre.net/Technicl/FinForce/FinForce.htm has a
good discussion on profiles. Also http://www.vacantisw.com/foildesign.htm explains just short of what a man needs to do. Catalina direct 13% template that seems to thin & have made a 12% - NACA 0012 template that seems too thick. I used this program to build my own template,
http://jean-claude.etiemble.com/tracfoil/telechargementE.htm the program allows you to print out & tape the 2 template sheets of paper together & make a hard template out of picture mat board or plywood.
http://www.nasg.com/afdb/do-search-airfoil-e.phtml has the NACA numbers if you want to crunch the cords yourself.
If you are not interested in technical analyses buy the CD template http://www.catalinadirect.com/Keel%20Video%20QT3%20Page.html or the one from
http://computerkeels.com/template.htm ,which the top racers use.
Hope this helps, I used West Epoxy & fillers. A "long board sander" will help see imperfections the template will not see.
After you sand blast & treat your keel I would recommend only one or two coats of epoxy & let the keel sit for a week in the sun. If you have trapped any air or impurities under the epoxy you will see it bubble. It is WAY better to fix those problems before you spend a few hundred on epoxy & see a bubble appear.
I used cheep squeegees to work in & smooth the epoxy which reduced sanding time.
Hope this helps,
Bob

Be sure to give the keel plenty of opportunity to dry. Those suckers are a lot more porous than they look.

Bob Vick,
I downloaded the TraCFOIL program, but don't know which foil to choose. How do I use this program to create a template for my 1973 Swing-keel so that it is faired properly? |

Bob Vick,
I mean, I'm a sailer, here, you know - cheap! Ha ha ha! The other site, http://computerkeels.com/template.htm, charges $60 for a template that I can print and use to create a hard template to use in fairing my keel.
If I know what foil to use on the TraCFoil program, I can create my own, right?
There's just so many foils to choose from and I don't know what numbers to input regarding specifics of my keel. Please help - thanks!! |
