The American Boat and Yacht Council, who sets the standards for boat builders in the United States, requires an AC master breaker near the shore power inlet. This breaker protects the otherwise unprotected run of wire from the power inlet to the main electrical distribution panel in the main salon.
Many early boats don't have this important safety feature that has been required in every new boat for years now. It is typically mounted near the power inlet, inside a locker, tucked up under the deck where it is accessible but is not subject to splash or rain.
