First boat I've ever had w/a topping lift. May sound like a silly question, but do you keep it attached while sailing?
There is also a pigtail on the backstay and I know that is detached under sail, of course.
I am using the topping lift to hold the boom up at outhaul, while docked. Would the pigtail be sufficient or would it put too much weight on the stay? How do you keep the boom from swinging port and star while sitting, docked, bobbing around? I also have the piggie attached, but it has no weight on it. Maybe that is to keep it from swinging too far.. duh?
Thanks from a newbie. Linda |

If you don't have any weight on the pigtail, then you may have the topping lift too high. I just use the topping lift at the slip (as I too often forget to undo the pigtail until it is too late). A tight mainsheet with the traveler pulled to one side is a good way to restrict motion of the boom.
Some people remove the topping lift when they sail. I am not one of them. I like to be able to reef or drop the sail quickly if I need to, so I keep it up all the time. If you sail with it on, be sure that it is not too high, or it will affect the mainsail shape.

Thanks, Michael! You have answered my question.
Now, if I can get the drain thru hull fixed, I'll be in business.
Yes, look under 'plumbing'!
Thanks again!
