Hey Gang,
What is the 'volcano' on the C22 that I hear mentioned from time to time?

On my 1987 C22, the volcano is where the keel cable hose attaches to the hull. It is located directly under the winch and the keel cable runs through it. Of special note is the fact that the top of the volcano is below the water line. If the keel cable hose comes off in the water the boat sinks! Maybe I'm paranoid, but mine gets monthly visual inspections. |

I avoid the problem with the valcano hose by removing the wood panel which hides the wench and the hose. It may not be cosmetically pleasing, but I can see the wench, cable, and the hose when lowering and raising the keel. |

My Winch is exposed, I have a panel sorta oblong triangle shaped that covers the bilge area where the drain lines, volcano and hose are, but the winch, which is mounted to the companionway, is exposed....is there a piece of wood to cover that area as well?

Garrett, did you also see the shots that included the "volcano" while you were looking at the winch panel in my 2nd battery project (above)?

I only wish I'd gotten something a little bigger -- even a C-25 -- two years ago when I decided to get back into sailing after a twenty-year hiatus (my last boat, back in the '80s, was a 60' Alden schooner). But all I wanted two years back was something to get me back out on the ocean, small enough to be not a lot of work and expense, and this C-22 was available at an affordable price.
Now that I've poured over $17K into Chip Ahoy along with two years of seemingly non-stop labor to get it just about where I wanted it, I'll be keeping it for a while. I can't afford NOT to at this point, at least for a few more years!

Did you see on my Chip Ahoy website the info on replacing the keep cable, hose, clamps, etc., and rebuilding my keel winch?

Hello, Chip, I just looked at the picture of your volcano and turning ball, which I had read about in your converstions, but of the three Cat22 that I've had I don't remember ever seeing a turning ball. To say the least I was surprised, I'll have to go out and look at #6448 and see if there is one. Of all the worry that I've heard some think about the boat sinking if the hose came off, I just never gave it a thought. For those who are/were worried I would like to offer this thought. These boats have been around for 30 years and there have been only a few, odd ones that could have had dier consequences. I've replaced cables but never bothered to even think about replacing the hose, the clamp once because it was rusty with a stainless one.

Hi Skip,
Yes, I saw most all of your pages, and it is my motivation to do some projects using your guides and encouragement......
The internet has a bad rap with all the porno and such, but wow, it is a wealth of info that I could not get in a lifetime of reading and meeting people in person!

Here's a twist to dealing with the behavior of "Vesuvius":
I removed and discarded the original reinforced rubber hose, lightly refaired and smoothed the fiberglass surrounding the keel-to-hull pipe, cleaned & greased the turning ball -and- used a foam "noodle" with a hole in the center cut to length (garden variety floatation tube) as a "hose packing".
Next I ran a pull line through the center of the noodle. After packing the the new vinyl hose, I plulled the keel cable through and added a ss fender washer at the bottom of the noodle where it meets the turning ball (to avoid friction at connection surface of the two). I also used a heat gun to "sweat" the vinyl hose on and added three new ss clamps.
Be warned! This requires considerable dexterity and patience to pack, as the noodle diameter is greater than the inner diameter of the vinyl hose.
The new, packed clear vinyl hose w/ blue stripes (tractor supply) was fitted at the top with a PVC cap (hole drilled).. The cable was re-attached to the winch and remounted.
Net Effect:
I removed the keel panel and put a similar piece of wood "behind" the winch with the white capped vinyl hose rising out of the storage hatch nearly touching the winch. The water has not made it up the densely packed noodle hose yet - No Eruptions!!. The vinyl hose is (John Deere) tough.. it should last the life of the boat!. The area looks nice, is functional with fast access to the volcano area and winch.
I sometimes squirt a couple shots of Tilex into the cap hole to prevent the petri tube effect. May have to repack the hose with some new noodle someday due to the cable forces against it....
My Grandmother allways told me "if you do things more than once, you are working for the devil" when doing projects for her farms. Guess overkill is a result of such advice...

I will shoot some pictures over the next few weeks and notify you via this post where I put them. I own and run cotton.com: might set up a subdomain explictly for C-22 upgrades and service. I am an old computer geek.. (IBM, Fluke, ATARI, ISP, WISP, blah, blahh..)
In any event, I will send them to you when available..!

Mine leaked. The boat is an '81.
When I looked for info about the leak on the Internet, I read that the volcano was originally built around ordinary garden hose fittings and if I tried to tighten them they might break off and send me straight to the bottom, wrench in hand.
So I had the boat yard take her out of the water, cut off the volcano, and put in a proper through hull. It cost $700 but man oh man do I sleep better.
