I went for a walk on the docks last evening and started noticing the different, if not just plain weird boat names. I once had a good friend in the northwest that named his sailboat “Vu Déjà” which meant, “I know I’ve never been here before”. My boats name is “DOVE”, named after Robin Lee Graham’s sailboat in which he circumnavigated the earth at a very young age. Robin Graham’s book about his journey is what first sparked the love of sailing in me. Not exactly a weird boat name I know. One vessel I saw last evening was called “What’s Up Doc”, owed by a physician no doubt.
Anyway, back to my post here: I was wondering if you have seen or if your vessel has an unusual name?

Hailing Port: Melbourne, FL |

When I first saw the Sport at the Atlanta Nationals in 2004, I knew I had to have one. I have owned Catalina 22s since I first started sailing some thirty years ago. When I bought it, I knew it would probably be my last one. (I am not getting any younger.) So I thought about my sailing career and decided that since I was probably in the last phase of it, I must be in the twilight of my sailing career. Hence the name, Twilight Zone. |

Best boat name of all time, for incorporating the class name into the boat name, I saw back in the 70's: UnjustiFireball.
We're naming our 22 "Heelin' Dancer," which in parts of Scotland would be heard as 'Highland Dancer,' which my wife once was. Cooincidentally I used to sail a Highlander years ago whose emblem is a male Highland dancer figure. |

I think small boats should have names no longer than one syllable. This is why I named my Catalina-22 “Hola!” Nice friendly name written in big bold letters on each side of the boat. I’m always amazed how many people yell “Hola!” back to me… Hola means hello and without the “h”, “ola” means wave ~ Frank |

I've been thinking of renaming my boat "WORK". That way I can tell people I am going to "WORK" this weekend. Or, I'm at "WORK". Or, I spend a lot of time at "WORK". Or, I love my "WORK". Or, there is no place I'd rather be than at "WORK. |

Model/Year: 1974 C22 Poptop/swing keel
Hull No. 4244
Hailing Port: Grapevine |

My poor neglected project C22 is called "Being Time". When my now almost grown son was small he would say, "Mom, I wanna be time with you" when he wanted to snuggle. I like that thought of being there in the moment rather than 'spending' time what happens when it's all spent? I hope to get the boat in the water this year, and have some quality time being with family/friends in the future.
Anyway, and my little sunfish clone that we don't know what in the world it is (so it's nicknamed the clonefish', but her proper name is cheap thrills) - bought it and it's trailer for $250, got a rudder and tiller for 15 and a sunfish sail for 10 from Luckenbach down in central texas (the sailintexas guy not the town), the daggerboard is a cut down fiberglass one from another boat that was epoxied. Another friend donated a dolphin senior sail. She's what I'm practicing the fiberglass skills on for redoing the fiberglass on the C22. We had to put new bearings on, and new tires but for under $500 it sure is a lot of sailing fun for the money - even if it isn't a c22.

My kids helped name our boat - "Booyah!." I wanted to stay away from a play on nautical words and wanted more of an expression of jubilation - of course when I am repairing the boat I use other expressions.
Our family is a fan of a kids show on Disney channel called "Kim Possible" and her sidekick, Ron Stoppable, always says "Booyah!" when he is excited so we voted as a family and that's what we went with. |

Well, the friend who introduced me to sailing in '50 got sick and knew it that taxes would eatup the 13 acre property that they bought for $100 an acre, near the top of Palas Verde pennisula, with a 270 degree view, was then up to $100,000 or more. So he divorced his wife. He was building Torch for a millionaire, and made the jib a deep red, so Elaine could see him from their living room. The name TORCH was for the torch that he stil carried for her. I finally was able to afford to buy her and sailed her for 15 years. Then moved to Texas and bought TORCH II II, a play on words for Torch 22, every one called it Torch Tu Tu, so then I changed and the next two C22's are called TORCH of FREEDOM, which is my second avocation as a member of the John Birch Society, to do what I can to help elect statesmen who will vote to save our freedom.

Tidely-Idley was named by my 5 year old son whose favorite book is "Burt Dow: Deep Water Man" by Robert McClosky. Burts Tidley Idley "leaks too. Except when its pulled up on shore for patching, caulking and painting. Which is most of the time." I though that fit perfectly. |

When I lived in Port Townsend, Washington, there was a gillnet fishing boat that traveled from the Puget sound to the Coast on a trailer several times every season. She was about 10 feet wide, so the owner painted the transom yellow and named her WIDE LOAD in big black letters.
Just to add to the confusion, I have heard from several sources that it is good luck if your boat name has seven letters. It's not bad luck if it's not seven letters.
Also, it's bad luck to change a boat name, unless the boat has had bad luck, then it's OK to change the name in hopes of changing the luck.
And this is for you Al. When I ran (and won) for a minor political office in Port Townsend, I had the honour of being called a socialist by members of the local John Birch Society. To be placed in the company of those genuine American patriots who have been redbaited over the years is as good as a congressional medal of honour to me.

BLOW JOB
If you can get past the sexual connotation....it's a great name for a sailboat!!! |
