We just bought Catalina 22 Hull #14840, and a brand new Tohatsu outboard with electric start. We need to buy a battery (or 2), as the boat did not come with one. Our boat will be used for day sailing only, and we'll use the motor only to get in and out of the harbor. We've been told that we can run both the electric start for the outboard and the cabin/nav lights off one battery. (The outboard has an alternator that will supposedly recharge the battery.) It would be great to not have to buy two batteries, but we've got questions.
1. Is it true that we can run everything off one battery?
2. If so -- Deep-cycle, golf cart, or standard auto battery?
3. How do we connect cables coming from two different directions (forward from the outboard and aft from the electrical panel) to a battery terminal? We don't just put them on top of each other, do we? Doesn't seem like it would work to us, but if we knew better, we wouldn't be asking.
Thanks very much. |

Sounds to me like you want a dual purpose battery. You can buy a battery that is for starting and for deep discharge. This will start your enging and run all of your electric. Your electric demads during a day sail probably are not that great.
As for your electric connections....put the black and red from the motor directly to the battery terminals. Also put your black and red from the electric panel on the same battery terminals.

Buy a marine deep cycle battery. The demands of starting your outboard are not that high.
Connect positive to positive and negative to negative. You can get crimp on rings for each set of wires. The positive and negative sides are different diameters.

We really appreciate all your input. We wound up getting a dual-purpose battery from Sears. We had to add a connection to one of the wires coming from the electrical panel, but matched the connection to the gauge of the wire, used a crimper, and that went fine. Everything is working great. Thanks. |
