I installed a Jensen marine radio in my boat and connected it to the existing AM/FM antenna put in by a previous owner, which is tucked away under the gunwale. The AM/FM reception is fairly good but reception of the NOAA weather bands (162 MHz) is variable and often no good at all in the sheltered anchorages which we try to frequent.
I'm wondering whether a masthead antenna would be best, or perhaps a flexible or telescoping antenna mounted somewhere on a back corner where it wouldn't get in the way.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you have a masthead vhf ant mounted, you can buy a special splitter that hooks to this and use it for am-fm. It should work great for the weather info as well. It does not prevent using the vhf ... so this could be your answer.
Look in the boating catalogs. I have been told it works great.
Good luck

Thanks - however I don't have a vhf.
I see that West Marine sells a 16" flexible AM/FM antenna which seems to have a swivel base so it could be mounted on the rear gunwale and lie flat when not in use. Good and cheap too.I may give this a try. Has anyone used it? Will it get the weather bands?
