Hello all,

Gene and Rich have talked me into doing a C22 performance sailing column in the MainBrace. I hit upon the idea of a "Dear Himmingbird" column. Think of Dear Abby but for C22 racing. I see it as a way to give back to the C22 class.

The first edition comes out in the next mainbrace. I'm now looking for fresh ideas. Please send me you questions, anything goes as long as it is C22 sailing related. Don't be afraid the names will be changed to protect the guilty. ;-) I want to make it fun and informative.

Please email your ideas to [email protected]

Good Sailing,

Thanks Pete!

Once a month may be too much. I am still learning from your tip at the 2005 Nationals! :D

Dear Abby - Sometimes I have great tacks and sometimes I don't. Can you walk me through step by step what you do (physically and mentally) to tack your boat and get great acceleration. Like what is in your decision when to tack, how far do you push your tiller, weight placement for you and your crew, adjusting rigging and shifting gears, and sail trim are a few areas I'm interested in imporving. Oh yeah and going fast!

Hi HUmmingbird:
Add me to the list about the tacking. I just want to get enough steam to get thru a tack on a less than windy day, but windy enough to sail straight into the flats!!
Thanks. linda

I'd appreciate your thoughts on "flat is fast" for the C22. Heeling over is fun for a thrill, but it ultimately slows you down, yet many racers seem to ignore this about the C22 hull design.

All my responses will be published in the MainBrace. You need to be a member of the C22 National Sailing association to get a copy.

Al, It is time for you to blow some dust off your wallet and join the C22NSA.

Al Ge - come on out. Gene Furgeson won the Texas Spinnaker championship at age 78, IRRC, only a few years ago.

Bob, Are you sure about that? The last time Gene won the Texas State Spinnaker Champs was in 2000. That would make Gene 82?!

Since 2000 the Spinnaker States trophy wheel has sat in my front room. Hurricane Rita won it in 2005.

I know Al, that is why I tease him. He's older than Moses.

Yeah, I'm 81, and slowing down, I think Gene is just a kid of 77-8.

LCYC, Wurstfest, 2005. I thought he won it and Hayslip was 2nd. You weren't there.

Bob, That would have been the Region 8 Spinnaker Champs. I've only been down to Wurstfest one time in 2004. Gene won it again last year.

The Texas State Spinnaker Champs are held in conjunction with the NOOD regatta in Galveston. In 2005 it was blown out by Hurricane Rita. You should make plans to come down to the NOODs. The NOODs are a first class event. This year we will be sailing out of Houston YC.

Pete,

Did the 'Dear Hummingbird' idea die? I don't see it in Mainbrace.
