I am extremely new to sailing. I bought an 86 Catalina 22, #13558.
My question is when is the sail stretched too far or worn out?
The sails that came with the boat are original. I am the third owner.
I was told it was sailed in the Chesapeake Bay.
The sails were boxed, from a business that cleans sails, when I got the boat.
They look brand new. They feel stiff like everyone describes from what I've read.
I read somewhere someone said their mainsail looked like a rear spinnaker. Mine billows out like that too. But, I don't have anything to compare it too. I am the only sailboat in the area I sail. The big issue is the rear of the boom. It is not parallel with the deck. It hangs down at least a foot further than the gooseneck.
Am I adjusting wrong or does the sail look new but worn out?

If your boom is sloping aft when you have the main up, your leech is either really stretched or you're not raising it all the way up. I would hazard to guess you're not raising it enough since those last couple of feet often times need to be swigged to finish it off. Also, make sure your mainsheet and vang is loose when you raise sail. You could be holding the boom down!!!
