Install an easy and inexpensive way to keep you and the crew from being "bonked."
A custom made, vinyl coated 3/32" 7x7 stainless wire attaches next to the backstay at the masthead. Attach the small single block to the bottom end of the wire. An eye strap and cheek block are attached to the aft end of the boom, port and starboard. A cleat is mounted on the bottom of the boom at a location convenient to the crew. The line is tied to the eye strap, lead up and through the block on the wire, then down through the block on the aft end of the boom, then forward to the cleat.
To increase light air performance, use the topping lift
to raise the boom thereby freeing the leech of the main.
When you pull on the line, the boom rises (high enough to be completely clear of the cockpit for an evening at anchor!) Unlike the pigtail commonly seen attached to the backstay near the boom, the topping lift allows the boom to swing outboard without tugging on the backstay. Therefore the topping lift safely keeps the boom out of the cockpit even if the boat is off-the-wind. Very helpful while hoisting or dousing the main or while reefing.
