This filter element is the spin on style, with the capability of filtering out particles down to a size of 10 microns (model R15T). Be careful which filter you use. There are several replacement elements available that look identical. For example, there is what appears to be the same filter that only filters down to 30 microns. It leaves particles in the fuel that are too big and may clog the engine's filter. Another version filters to only 2 microns. This is filtering particles from the fuel that are so small it may clog almost immediately leaving you without power soon after replacement.

Sometimes these filters come from the manufacture with small blemishes that do not effect performance or fit. This year there is a limited supply of these filters due to a challenge in the manufacture's logistics.

Catalina Yachts began installing these filters in October 1998. Boats built previous to that date would benefit from the addition of a pre-filter to remove both water and contaminants from the fuel supply. In fact, current engine installation instructions from Westerbeke (who make the universal engines), recommend the installation of a filter before the fuel pump.
