These chainplates include the integral, ball and socket style tierod. Used on the Catalina 36 for connecting the lower shrouds. This newer design was introduced in around 2002 to help prevent leaks as the chainplates drop in through the top of the deck rather than protruding up through the deck as was the installation method for the earlier design.
If your boat has experienced a leak at the chainplate, remove the entire chainplate and tierod from the boat and inspect them carefully. Salt water held against the stainless steel for an extended period at deck level will often cause crevice corrosion that will not be visible from above or below. This corrosion can compromise the integrity of your entire rig.
