This head is a logical replacement for thousands of old Par / Jabsco heads used over the years. It's still made with a white vitreous china bowl for ease of cleaning. But it has an important new safety feature too.
We all know we should close the water supply through hull valve after flushing the head to prevent flooding. But how many sailors actually do? And guests are usually not even aware of the danger.
The new Twist'n'Lock safety feature guards against flooding and waste backflow. A simple twist of the pump handle locks the piston in the down position. A protrusion on the bottom of the piston actually presses down on the flapper valve below and helps prevent back-flow back into the bowl. Turning the handle back to a natural operating position opens the lock again. Operation is clearly marked on the top of the pump assembly.
If your old head needs a routine rebuild, use the maintenance kit shown below. But if there are more problems than the simple maintenance kit will solve, spend a few more dollars for a new head and you'll benefit form the added security of having the safer design aboard.

1) The Twist'n'Lock safety feature is intended as an additional, redundant line of defense to aid in back-flow prevention. It is not intended to replace the recommended practice of closing all head thru-hull valves when the head is not in use.
