To increase light air performance, use the topping lift to raise the boom thereby freeing the leech of the main.

When you pull on the line, the boom rises (high enough to be completely clear of the cockpit for an evening at anchor!) Unlike the pigtail commonly seen attached to the backstay near the boom, the topping lift allows the boom to swing outboard without tugging on the backstay. Therefore the topping lift safely keeps the boom out of the cockpit even if the boat is off-the-wind. Very helpful while hoisting or dousing the main or while reefing.
